Berliner Bakery is a small wife/husband operation that sells doughnuts at a few markets around Sydney.

Rachael, the wife in the equation, makes the doughnuts herself from scratch.

I got mine from the Farmers Markets at Kings Cross that happen every weekend. Rachael was working the stall herself.

I chose the Rhubarb & Custard Berliner. Other options were Nutella and Jam.

It was, in a word, exceptional.

The dough was cooked to perfection. Very tasty dough with a light covering of sugar. Moist, with just the right amount of ‘chewy’.

The filling was superb. Homemade rhubarb compote and custard.

It’s the first doughnut with a rhubarb filling I’ve had.

Biting into the doughnut, you get the rhubarb compote first and then comes the custard. Just like a rhubarb and custard dessert.

Both the rhubarb and the custard were quite runny and very tasty. Not too sweet.

Rachael told me she lived in London for 13 years and when she came back to Australia, wanted to set up a food-related business. She saw making and selling Berliner doughnuts as a good option and has established a loyal following at the markets.

She considered getting the blank doughnuts from a commercial supplier, like Bob & Petes, but preferred the flavour of her own creations. I wholeheartedly agree – the difference is enormous.

They don’t have a shop or an online ordering system – you have to go to the markets to get one of these gems.

Markets where you’ll find Berliner Bakery include Kings Cross, Orange Grove and Entertainment Quarter (formerly Fox Studios).
