LA Donuts at Beverly Hills in Sydney’s south has been going for a while now and has steadily built up as strong following. And I’m pleased to see it. They deserve it. Good doughnuts at reasonable prices.

On a recent visit, I got a box of 6 mixed doughnuts. I’m going to chat about one of their signature doughnuts – the Knafeh.

I have to admit, I have never had knafeh before. Not in doughnut form or in its more customary form. So I had nothing to compare it with.

Knafeh is a middle-eastern sweet cheese dessert that apparently is enjoying a bit of a craze at the moment, if food reviewers are to be believed (that’s often a big ask). I like baklava so maybe knafeh is just a good.

Well, I didn’t enjoy it. It just didn’t hit the spot with me.

I’m not saying it was a bad doughnut – it just didn’t suit my taste. LA Donuts obviously sells plenty of them, so there are lots of people buying them. But there were 4 of us who tried the Knafeh Doughnut and none of us liked it.

For me the cheese filling wasn’t sweet enough. I was expecting something like cream cheese, the sort of taste you’d get in a cheese cake, but it was more like a sour taste. Not my thing.

I have to say well done to LA Donuts for creating a doughnut that you don’t see every day.

If you like knafeh, give this doughnut a try. I’d like another opinion on it.
