When I tell people I write a blog about Sydney’s best doughnuts, the first thing most people say is, “So where is the best doughnut in Sydney?”

My first response is usually Milk Bar by Café Ish in Redfern.

Also known as The Milk Bar by Café Ish,

Also known as Milkbar by Caféish.

Although it’s a diner, it is without doubt among my favourite places in Sydney to get a doughnut. They make their own every day and do it to perfection.

I heard they had changed their recipe, which had me more than a little concerned. However, my fears were put to rest when I tried one of their Oreo Doughnuts. The dough flavour was still much the same, perhaps not quite the same texture.

On this occasion, I also got a Snickers flavoured milkshake. It too was extremely delicious.

What’s so good about Café Ish doughnuts?

Each doughnut is soft and spongy and melts in your mouth. It has a real freshness about it like it came out of the cooker not long ago. It holds the toppings like it should and the toppings complement the dough to perfection.

New recipe, but still very good

They are unique in flavour and texture, but still what you want from a doughnut.

Milk Bar by Café Ish doesn’t try to be overly creative by heaping their doughnuts with superfluous toppings or fillings. They let the doughnut do the talking.

Now, which one do I feel like today?

The choice of flavours is always good – with a few of your basics mixed with the occasional experimental ones.

If I lived closer to Redfern, I’d be a regular.

For now, I just drop in when my travels take me close by. But believe me, I look forward to each of those visits with drooling mouth.
