You can fool some of the people some of the time…
And so it appears C9 Chocolate and Gelato at Newtown is trying to fool us into believing their cinnamon doughnuts are Italian Doughnuts. Nuh uh. No, they ain’t. They’re as Italian as chiko rolls, sushi and two-minute noodles.
C9 has just added the description of ‘Italian’ to make them sound better than they actually are, and perhaps to justify hoiking up the price.

There is nothing special about these doughnuts. I have a funny feeling that they simply source them from bulk supplier Bob & Pete’s like many cafés and takeaway joints in Sydney.

As you can see by the photo, the so-called Italian Doughnut is cake-like, which is not an Italian-style doughnut at all.
C9 is probably better known for its ice-cream than its doughnuts. I first spotted them in Darlinghurst, but when I went back a few weeks later, the store had closed.
At the moment, they have outlets in Newtown and Crows Nest. I went to the Newtown store where the guy serving was very pleasant. On and earlier visit to the Newtown store, there was a young girl behind the counter playing with her phone – that’s a customer service no-no!
I recommend going for an ice-cream rather than a doughnut.
