I recently had the opportunity to holiday in Europe and of course I tried to experience as many doughnuts as I could.

One of my favourites was a doughnut from a store called Awiteks, of which there seemed to be a few scattered around Krakow.

The Polish clearly love their doughnuts and make lovely versions, similar to the ones we have in Australia. I saw quite a few stores packed full of lovely fresh doughnuts – I wished I could have had more.

They sell lots of pastries in Poland and they’re always given to you in a plastic bag.

This doughnut, with raspberry jam filling, was soft, fresh, and tasty. It wasn’t too chewy.

It had a vanilla glazing on top with sprinkles of dried orange peel (a popular topping on Polish doughnuts).

The raspberry jam filling was genuine raspberry jam, not a fake puree which we get here – it had small seeds and a vibrant flavour.

Despite the angry face the doughnut made at me when I broke it in half (see picture), the doughnut was a delight to eat, and made me search for more doughnuts in Poland.

The price was also good with the exchange rate of Polish zloty to Australian dollars – it worked out to be less than AUD$2.
