One thing I like about The Doughnut Mum at Warwick Farm is that it is a down-to-earth doughnut shop. There really isn’t anything too fancy about the place. The doughnuts aren’t ‘loaded’ for visual effect. They can be judged on their merit. And the prices reflect that – they are good value.

On my recent visit, I got among my choices a Custard Doughnut, because Custard Doughnuts are one of my favourites.

This is an excellent choice for those of you who, like me, don’t want their doughnuts too sweet.

The custard is like custard should be – not too sweet. It’s quite a runny custard, so you have to eat this one quickly. The custard is home-made, which you can tell – it simply does’t have that ‘commercial’ taste. Commercially-made custard is sweeter too.

It had a sprinkling of powdered sugar on top, but it doesn’t make the doughnut too sweet.

The doughnut base is beautifully perfect. Soft, chewy and cooked to perfection. It’s a great host for a good home-made custard. You can see by the photo that it is airy with a big hole. That to me is a sign of a good home-made doughnut.

In a word, excellent.
