Selected Doughnuts @ Uncle Donut, Geelong

be Geelong 13 box

It was in Geelong that I found, during my trip of SA and Victoria, the one and only shop dedicated to doughnuts.

Along Little Malop Street is the doughnut shop called Uncle Donut. What an awful name. Is that really the best name they could think of? Uninspiring, old-fashioned and a little creepy at the same time.

I went in at about 6pm on a Saturday evening. There was a young girl on her own. The full range wasn’t available, but there were still plenty to choose from. The girl knew her stuff, offering me good, polite service.

I chose three doughnuts – Lemon Meringue, Tiramisu and Gaynetto.

Overall, I was a little disappointed. As a specialty shop, their doughnuts should be the best damned doughnuts I’d ever had.

The Lemon Meringue was the favourite among my family. The lemon filling was tangy and on top was an impressive meringue with flamed tops. The dough was soft, but like I said, isn’t the best I’ve had.

The Tiramisu was okay, but not exceptional. The filling was a coffee custard while the icing was a soft dark chocolate.

The Gaynetto, I assume, is a hybrid of well-known ice-cream flavours, Golden Gaytime and Cornetto. Again, it didn’t hit the mark. It had a toffee custard just under the top, which was probably meant to be a bit deeper in the dough. The icing on top was a hard milk chocolate with bits of toffee. It didn’t really call to mind either ice-cream.

Uncle Donut sells their own T-shirts. I’m afraid this middle-aged man doesn’t want to walk around in a T-shirt with ‘Uncle Donut’ splashed across it.

I went past again at about 8.30pm and Uncle Donut was closed with a ‘Sold Out’ sign on the door. Their advertised closing time on Saturdays is 10pm.
