The opportunity of having a Portuguese Custard Doughnut was mighty appealing.

So when I saw that the Portuguese Tart stand, Natas & Co., at the Kings Cross Markets also sold doughnuts, I was in like Flynn.

They offered a choice of custard, jam and Nutella – pretty much the standard selection of filled doughnuts.

It struck me how the doughnuts were filled. They sort of looked like hamburger buns with filling coming out the middle. I don’t recall seeing doughnuts like that before.

What about the taste?

It was the custard that made it.

Overall it was quite nice.

The dough was a little dry.

There was plenty of custard filling and the flavour of the custard was excellent. It was a very good consistency and not too sweet.

It had a coating of sugar to lift the sweetness.

If you like Portuguese Tarts, you’ll probably enjoy these doughnuts – make sure you get one filled with custard.

Next time, I’ll probably try one of their Portuguese Tarts.
