I’m sure a lot of people would say “Where on earth is Mortdale?” Well, it’s in Sydney’s southern suburbs, not far from Hurstville.

And off in an unusual corner of Mortdale (the industrial area) is a fairly new cafe called The Naked Baker. The deliberately provocative name suggests there is something raw about the place, but I didn’t really spot it when I went there recently. All the staff were fully dressed.

I had heard lots of good stories about The Naked Baker, so I dropped in for a doughnut.

First thing – it’s not cheap, but we all have bills to pay.

However I was horrified when the young person serving me put my doughnut carelessly into a paper bag. I knew straight away that the lovely dollop of custard on top would now be stuck to the inside of the bag. Why do they do that? The baker has taken great pride in creating good quality food only for it to be damaged with lazy service. I wasn’t impressed, and the look that I gave the person who served me made sure they knew it.

The doughnut however was very good.

It had a dusting of milk powder outside.

The custard was a little too sweet – just a little. I reminded me of baby custard in flavour and was a similar consistency.

The shell was generally soft, but there were parts of the outside that were crispy.

A very nice doughnut. Shame about the service.
