When I was young, my mother would occasionally make lamingtons. What a treat – homemade lamingtons. Such effort she’d go to, cooking the slab of cake, melting the chocolate and then the messy job of rolling it in coconut. And my family would scoff them down pretty quickly. I remember the chocolate sauce she made was a rich, luscious dark chocolate. It had a unique flavour and of course, being runny, it would sink into the soft cake.

I have never really tasted that chocolate sauce again until I had the Choc Somer Donut from Grumpy Donuts.

I guess the word Somer is meant to be close to the name Homer, as in Homer Simpson.

Grumpy Donuts are arguably makers of the best doughnuts in Sydney. They are simply superb. The dough is a firm, chewy texture and the toppings they choose are first class.

So it goes without saying that the Choc Somer Donut from Grumpy Donuts was fantastic.

The chocolate topping was soft and a little runny and had that same rich chocolate taste that my mother’s lamingtons had. It was finished off with red, green and white sprinkles, giving it a Christmas touch.

What made it even better was that it was in a pack of six Grumpy Donuts that was given to me for Christmas by some wonderful, thoughtful and generous friends.
