Valentinas is a cafe in Marrickville, away from the general shops. It’s very busy and rather trendy. It doesn’t take bookings so you need to rely on turning up at a good time to get a seat. Or, like me, just get a takeaway coffee and doughnut.
The service was very good. No wonder it’s busy.

They stock doughnuts from Grumpy Donuts in Camperdown – in fact I believe they are owned by the same people. Grumpy Donuts makes magnificent doughnuts, so I was confident I’d get a good doughnut from Valentina’s. I’m pleased they sell Grumpy’s doughnuts because I find it difficult getting to their Camperdown outlet.
Despite being ridiculously busy, the guy who served me was happy to talk about their doughnuts. I was sold on the Blueberry Crunch Donut.

As I said, the doughnuts from Grumpy are very good. The dough is a little bit different to your average doughnut. It is soft and spongy – a very good texture and has a slightly different flavour. Sort of a ‘hearty’ doughnut, you might say.

The topping was quite sweet and had plenty of flavour. I was worried that the ‘crunch’ part of the topping was going to be brown sugar, but it wasn’t as sweet as that.
They have some cute dinosaur-shaped doughnuts for kids (or immature adults like me) and a fritter that looks very good too.

Please note, they don’t have any of Grumpy’s gluten-free doughnuts at Valentina’s.
