Greek Doughnut @ Fofi’s Greek Kitchen, Darwin City Boutique Markets
There are several cafés in the Darwin CBD. I checked them all, but none sold doughnuts.
I checked the cake store on Cavenagh St called Kurt’s Cakes, but no doughnuts.
Coles and Woolworths have their usual doughnut selections. Woolworths had Long Johns. Coles had bags of mini jam, sugar and cinnamon, and packs of cinnamon and iced doughnuts.
But if you want a good doughnut in the Darwin CBD, in fact if you want a great doughnut in the Darwin CBD, you have to be patient. You have to wait until Friday.
Every Friday evening, they have the Darwin City Boutique Markets on Knuckey and Smith Streets. Not the biggest of markets, but the food quality is really good.
Imagine my surprise when I saw a Greek food trailer with delicious looking doughnuts hanging on horizontal sticks. I stopped in my tracks. Big, sugary, tempting doughnuts. Charles Darwin himself would have been impressed right there and then by the evolution of doughnuts.
The trailer was called Fofi’s Greek Kitchen. You can tell by the picture that the guy selling the doughnuts is one heck of a character.
The doughnut reminded me of the Macedonian jam doughnut I got from Alexanders in Sydney. It was very crisp on the outside with loads of sugar and had a real homemade feel about it. There were lots of air holes inside, the sort of thing you associate with so-called artisan bread.
My wife laughed at the way I had sugar all over my moosh while I was eating it. I didn’t care. This was one memorable doughnut.
When searching the internet about Fofi’s Greek Kitchen, I saw with horror that their business is for sale. Here is part of their announcement:
