I’ve searched the Gold Coast for a good doughnut, but haven’t had a whole lot of luck. I’m sure there is one there somewhere.

Just south of the Goldy in Tweed Heads is a cafe/bakery called Bread Social. Finally, a really good doughnut.

I got a Custard Donut, which they had labelled as a ‘Filled Donut’. That description is a bit vague, so when I asked about the filling, I got a pretty unfriendly response, like I’m an idiot for asking.

I could go on about the unfriendly service at Bread Social, but let’s just say it leaves a lot to be desired.

The donut, on the other hand, was very good. The best I’ve had on or near the Gold Coast.

As my friend behind the counter pointed out, it had a custard filling. The custard was excellent. Not too sweet and a lovely creamy consistency.

It was rolled in cinnamon sugar and had bits of fruit on top. That’s a really nice touch and one that isn’t really necessary, perhaps except to justify the price tag, which is a little more than I’d expect to pay.

The dough was also excellent and much like a Berliner, which was a full, chewy texture.

Terrible service but great donut.
