If I go on a road trip, I love finding local bakeries in rural areas. Nine times out of 10, they make awesome things.

And that is exactly the case with Barnetts Bakery at Crescent Head in northern NSW.

I had a meat pie and Jam Donut. The meat pie was one of the best I have ever tasted. It has loads of meat and plenty of flavour.

The donut was also fantastic.

The dough was the yellow variety. Beautifully cooked, soft, and full of flavour, it was an excellent base for the rest of the donut.

The outside was covered in a generous amount of caster sugar.

I would have liked the jam to have been homemade jam. Instead it was commercially made jam puree. A small disappointment with an otherwise delicious donut.

They had a choice of about 8 donuts. In my usual style, I chose the Jam Donut.

I noticed a sign for their ‘Dawn Buster Donut’ – a coffee in a warm donut cup lined with chocolate. I was so tempted to get it, but I opted for the Jam Donut instead with an eye on getting my coffee from the well-known cafe down the road.

Barnetts Bakery has been around for many years – since 1934, according to their website. In this ever-changing world, I hope they are around for a lot longer.
