Wollongong is a great place, especially for beaches. But there aren’t too many places to get a good doughnut. One of the places I reviewed a few years ago, Crown Donuts, has now closed.

There is a bakery in the main shopping centre in central Wollongong called Royal Bakery. It has been there for a long time and I’ve had a few things from them on the occasional trip to Wollongong that I have had. Each time I have been happy with my purchase.

I went to Royal Bakery one Sunday morning recently and got a coffee and one of their Custard Cinnamon Doughnuts.

The service was great, the coffee was good.

Sadly, the doughnut was not so good. It was stale.

Perhaps being a Sunday morning they didn’t bake anything overnight and just went with stock from the day before. Whatever the story, my doughnut was not enjoyable.

The custard was okay. It was firm and had plenty of flavour.

There was a good amount of cinnamon sugar on the outside.

But the dough was clearly not fresh. It easily broke apart instead of being chewy.

They had other things in the display case that I could have chosen and probably would have enjoyed. But my doughnut was too old. Such a shame. A fresh version would have been very good.
