I had heard that Daniel’s Donut had finally come to Sydney. One of the biggest, if not the biggest, donut chains in Victoria, it seemed only a matter of time for their expansion north. In what appears on the surface to be a smart business move, they are being stocked in 7-Elevens. I also believe they have a store in the Sydney CBD.

I have to confess up front – I am not crazy about Daniel’s Donuts. I have had them when I’ve travelled to Victoria and I don’t rate them highly.

Anyway, I was heading to a job early one morning recently when I thought I’d give them a try now that they are in Sydney. So when I passed a 7-Eleven in Riverwood, I dropped in to take a look.

At first glance, I knew I was not going to be impressed. The icings and toppings looked unimpressive.

Right here, I’ll tell you a brief story. When I went on a holiday to Vietnam a few years ago, I found a Dunkin Donut outlet. As we don’t have them in Australia, I was excited, because I had enjoyed them when I was in America several years before that. The donut from Vietnam’s Dunkin Donut was terrible. The icing had a particularly fake taste about it. The texture of the icing was awful and the flavour was horrid. I didn’t finish it. It wasn’t the same as the Dunkin Donuts I had in the USA.

Why I mentioned my Vietnam story is because the Daniel’s Donut Pineapple Donut I got from the 7-Eleven was very similar to the one I got in Vietnam. It too, I did not finish.

I don’t want to be in trouble with an organisation that is far bigger than me, so I’ll leave you to work out what I thought of the donut I got from the 7-Eleven.

I’m going to guess that these donuts are frozen and thawed daily for sale. And so they are going to be different from the ones made fresh instore in Victoria. So is this after all a smart business move – to stock them in 7-Elevens?

I’ll leave it at that. The bottom line is I won’t be buying any Daniel’s Donuts in future.
