American-style delis are becoming very popular in Australia. Hector’s Deli in Melbourne currently has 4 locations and it wouldn’t surprise me if they opened more soon.

Among their offerings is a Maple Glazed Doughnut. It’s a little different in that it has more of a square shape instead of the traditional round shape we expect in a doughnut.
When you see the photos, bear in mind that it had already travelled from Melbourne, thanks to my thoughtful daughter who brought it up to Sydney for me. So the glazing is a bit damaged from the transport.
The glaze has a strong maple flavour, which gives it a lift from a traditional vanilla glazing. It does however make it very sweet.

The dough is very moist and oily, and reminds me of Italian zeppole or sfingi, depending on where you come from. It’s delightfully chewy and squishy.
It is a large size so very fulfilling.
Definitely one to try.
