A friend of mine who lives in Penrith told me about a doughnut shop called Dolly’s Donuts at Glenbrook. For me, getting out that way is like travelling to a remote spot in the Amazon jungle. As luck would have it, my daughter headed out that way and I told her to pay Dolly’s Donuts a visit.

She came back with a couple of luscious doughnuts.
My favourite was the Vanilla Slice Donut.

My first observation was how it was covered top and sides in passionfruit icing. Most iced doughnuts are just covered on top, but this one had the icing around the sides as well. I liked that. And the fact that it was real passionfruit and not just yellow was also a positive. Many people have largely different opinions on the features of a vanilla slice, including on what the icing is. But I consider a vanilla slice has passionfruit icing. Not only was it passionfruit icing, but it was good passionfruit icing. It had lots of flavour and a lovely passionfruit zing.
My next observation was how heavy it was. It was obviously loaded with custard filling and had a heavy dough.
The filling was excellent. I could tell as soon as I cut it that it was homemade custard. It had flecks of vanilla bean and was an absolute perfect thickness and consistency for a custard doughnut filling.
The dough was also good and held everything in place nicely.
On the strength of the Vanilla Slice Donut, I am very impressed with Dolly’s Donuts. The other doughnuts in the range also look fantastic and I can’t wait to try more.
I have it on good authority (my daughter) that their gelato is also excellent.
