I know a lot of people adored Donut Papi from when it opened in Redfern several years ago. They moved to Marrickville but later closed the donut store, only to re-open recently under the name House Of Papi. At the time, it sounded like they were abandoning the donut business entirely. But what seems to be the case is that they have expanded, and become more of a cafe.

I spotted their new store in Marrickville so I went in to see what was going on.

Despite no longer being Donut Papi, they had plenty of donuts for sale. In fact donuts seemed to be their hero offering.

I was intrigued by a donut called Bega Cheese Donut, because I’ve never had a cheese donut before, so I asked about it. I was told it was cubes of Bega Cheese in a donut. That one didn’t appeal to me, so I got a Pineapple Donut.

I have to be honest and say that I was never a great fan of Donut Papi donuts. Their donuts were okay, but there are others that are far better. I was also never been impressed with the service, which at times was short of ordinary. Not only at the store, but also when they had a stand at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

And now that they are House Of Papi, it’s still the case.

My Pineapple Donut was okay, but not outstanding.

It had an old-skool Pineapple Donut appearance and flavoured glaze. It was soft and the pineapple flavour was alright.

So, okay, but not outstanding.
