A few years ago, cronuts were the fad. They were everywhere. I think they died off because many of them simply weren’t very good. So, it’s not easy to get a cronut anymore, let alone a good one.

One place that is still flying the cronut flag is Brewtown at Newtown, a popular cafe in a side street just off the main road. I’ve had their cronuts before and I know they are good.
They have a good choice of flavours and I went with the Crème Brûlée one, which is probably what I got last time as well.

In case you don’t know, a cronut is a cross between a croissant and doughnut. Usually it is more croissant than doughnut. A good one is difficult to make and apparently takes a long time.
As expected, the Brewtown Cronut was very good.
It was fresh and light with the oily, layered croissant taste. It had a light toffee topping on top so it wasn’t overly sweet.

It also had a layer of custard at the bottom. The custard was slightly runny and not too sweet, and a lovely complement to the croissant dough.
Beautiful. Just beautiful. You’ll go a long way before you’ll find a better cronut in Sydney.
