One of the wonderful readers of DomNuts, Issyd90, suggested I try a kkwabaegi (pronounced kwa-bay-gee), which is a Korean Doughnut. So I did a bit of Google searching of where I could find a good authentic one, and came across a Korean restaurant in Surry Hills called Soul Deli. (I had also found a place in Newtown, but when I got there, I discovered it had permanently closed).

Soul Deli is tucked away in a fairly quiet area – I’m not sure where their business comes from to be honest, but then I’m not that familiar with the area.
I went in and the staff were absolutely lovely. I asked about the Korean Doughnut and they showed me the twist that looked savoury to me. I asked if it was sweet and they assured me it was. So I got one – and it was very reasonably priced.
I expected a Korean twist doughnut to be just twisted dough with a sugar coating, like many twist doughnuts I’ve had in the past. But this was different. In fact it was a taste sensation.

It was warm and freshly cooked. It was soft and a little bit chewy.
It had a sweet rice syrup coating, which is a bit like sticky toffee. It also had sprinklings of sesame seeds. It was fantastic.
I love the way so many countries have their own versions of doughnuts. I’m pleased to say the Korean version – the kkwabaegi – is a great doughnut and unlike any other doughnut I’ve had before.

Now that’s an interesting looking kkwabaegi! Always love to read your new donut adventures
