I was fortunate enough to go to Queenstown in New Zealand recently. It’s a beautiful place. It has a famous burger joint called Ferg’s where there is a constant queue for their burgers. While I didn’t have a burger, I did get some things from their bakery and ice-cream shops. Most notably, I got a Boston Cream Donut.

According to the sign, the Boston Cream Donut at Fergbaker is famous. So I imagined it must be good. So I got one.

It was heavenly. Damn near as perfect for a doughnut as you’re likely to find.

It was coated in soft sugar. The dough was cooked to perfection and tasted beautiful. It was soft yet chewy and formed the foundation for the doughnut beautifully.

While sometimes you get Boston Cream Doughnuts with custard filling, this one had cream. And it was sensational cream. Lots of it too. Not too sweet, perfectly firm to be a doughnut filling.

I had several visits to Fergbakery and each time they had tons of Boston Cream Donuts in the display case, and I guess they were expecting to sell them all. When they taste that good, I think they would sell the lot.

The service was a bit ordinary, but the doughnut overshadowed that.

There’s no doubt that you’ll find some extraordinary doughnuts in New Zealand.
