Well, this one came out of the blue. Donut King Cinnamon Donut Twisties. Who’d have thought that?
I guess the bigger and better question is why did they think that?
To be honest, it sounds awful. So awful that it took me over a month to pluck up the courage to try them. I mean, the experience has the potential destroy my addiction both for cinnamon doughnuts and Twisties. Did they consider this potentially enormous impact when they proposed the flavour?
A group of friends gave me some encouragement to give them a try. So we gathered at a pub and broke open a pack – a genuine Pub Test.
The initial opinions were positive without being enthusiastic.
“Not what I was expecting.”
“Not as bad as expected”.
“I prefer spicy flavours.”
“I’d buy them if they were on special.”
My own thought was that the flavour was more subtle than expected. I associate Twisties with cheese flavour, so I was expecting a combination of the traditional cheese flavour with cinnamon sugar. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case. It was simply about the cinnamon sugar. And they weren’t as sweet as you might expect. And they certainly didn’t have a strong cinnamon flavour. Cinnamon is listed in the ingredients, but it was far from dominate.
I think if they were sweeter and had a more consistent shape they could pass for a breakfast cereal.
Something I noticed was that there were a lot more small sized bits of Twisties than you usually get in your average packet of cheese flavoured Twisties. So at the end of the pack, you need to pour them into your hand rather than pick them out one by one. They weren’t broken – they were simply small Twisties. I wonder why.
The Donut King Twisties are a limited edition. So they won’t be around forever. I could never see them being a permanent fixture on supermarket shelves. If you want to try them, you better get in quick.
I’m pleased to say, now that I’ve tried the Donut King Cinnamon Donut Twisties, my addiction with doughnuts and Twisties remains as solid as ever. Phew! But I am going back to the cheese flavoured Twisties.
