One evening I was heading back to Sydney’s Central Station and passed Krispy Kreme at the Ultimo end of the tunnel. I thought I’d pop in and get a doughnut with a flavour that you don’t get at the supermarkets that sell Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

They had a big selection, and I chose the Strawberry Jam Doughnut.

If you don’t know, I’m not a big fan of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Everything about them screams mass-produced.

The girl who served me was fast and efficient but seemed to be devoid of personality – avoided eye contact and said the absolute minimum. To give you an idea of the customer service standards, the next night I went back and asked for a milkshake. I didn’t see the choice of flavours on their sign, so I asked the guy who served me what flavours they had. Instead of teling me, he said, “It’s on the sign.”

The doughnut was okay. It was very fresh, with a very light and soft texture. There was plenty of jam in it, but the jam could have been anything. It did not feel like real strawberry jam, and I wonder how much strawberry is actually in the jam. My guess is zero.

If you’re in need of a doughnut fix, Krispy Kreme is a safe option.
