I recently read that the Boston Cream Doughnut is the second-most popular doughnut in the United States. Which made me wonder how they measure that. Who does the count? How is the count conducted? Who’s supplying the figures? Which led me to believe that it was probably just someone’s opinion.

Espresso Boys Doughnuts in Nowra, on the New South Wales south coast, is hidden in the back streets, so you have to make a conscious effort to go there to get a doughnut. And that’s what I did.
When I went in and saw the range, I asked the girl serving what the flavours were. She expertly rattled off all the flavours. I could have easily chosen several, but I went with a Boston Cream. I’m not sure why it’s called a Boston Cream when it doesn’t have cream in it – it has custard.

Anyway, I enjoyed my Boston Custard, sorry, Boston Cream Doughnut.
The dough was very soft and light. The chocolate icing was a good blend of soft and firm, meaning it stayed on the doughnut while I bit into it, and didn’t melt.

The custard was also very nice. It was light and creamy, not too sweet. Hang on – the custard was creamy. Maybe that’s where the title comes from.
If I had more time in Nowra I would have liked to try some of the other flavours. The Finger Bun Doughnut was one I’m sorry I missed out on this time. Definitely next time I’m in Nowra.
